Sylvester Benjamin Butler was the oldest of three children of George Sylvester Butler and Carrie Savage Butler.
Eva Lutz (later Butler) was Sylvester’s former student at Pleasantville High School and protégé of teacher Gertrude Tolbert.
Sylvester served in World War I and rose to Captain in the 301st Supply Train.
Sylvester had a long career in education—teacher, principal, and Superintendent of Schools in multiple districts including Groton, CT.
Eva was a noted historian, naturalist, archaeologist, and founder of several regional institutions including the Tomaquag Indian Museum.
The S.B. Butler School in Groton, CT is named in Sylvester’s honor.
Sylvester died in a car accident in 1970, less than a month after the mourning ceremony for Eva.
