Joseph settled in Wethersfield where he inherited lands from his father in the south meadow. He was made a freeman in 1668 and later became a householder in the Rocky Hill district in March 1670–71.
Joseph's second wife, Mary Bushnell, was born February 20, 1672 in Saybrook and died June 1, 1735 in Wethersfield. She had been the widow of William Miller of Glastonbury, who died August 22, 1705. Her parents were John and Sarah Scranton Bushnell.
Joseph's son Benjamin (1673–1750) lived at 27 Coles Rd in Cromwell, CT (then Middletown Upper Houses). He drowned at sea in 1750. Benjamin and his wife Thankful Sage had four children: Mary, Comfort, Lucia, and Joseph. Thankful Sage was the daughter of John Sage and Hannah Starr.
